More unpaid internships are cropping up for MBA students, which some education officials say is an odd development since the program didn't have that many positions in the past.
Jack Oakes, director of career development at the University of Virginia's Darden School of business, told Business Week that in a typical year unpaid internships make up less than 1 percent of MBA student placements. So far this year has seen that number rise to 5 percent and may hit 10 percent.
The trend seems to be hitting small and large firms, and appears to be born from the weak economy and the desire of companies to start cutting back on expenses.
Oakes told the news provider MBA students should take such opportunities if they are afforded to them, despite the lack of wages.
"There's nothing on a résumé that says you need to show whether or not you were paid," Oakes said.
Business professionals interested in gaining experience at a corporate firm through an internship may see this as a cue to get their MBA degree.
