Online MBA courses are reportedly growing in popularity, with help from the current economy.
According to Business Week, online higher education enrollment grew by 12.9 percent in the yearlong period leading up to fall, 2007. This compares to a traditional higher education population that only grew by 1.2 percent. A total of 14 percent of online students are reportedly at the graduate level.
In one example, the report cited approximately a 25 percent jump in online MBA applications in the last year at the University of Florida. The online program at Arizona State University is said to have seen up to a 20 percent jump.
"If I had to move from Colorado to somewhere else, I could still keep working on my MBA. I think the programs are getting better, too. It's really hard to tell if someone went distance or fulltime," online MBA student Denny Basham told Business Week.
Along with the increased flexibility, online MBA programs can also save money, which is especially important for many in the current economy. Economic conditions in their own right have driven many students back to school as well, hoping to either ride out the recession or to become more competitive when the job market does begin to recover.
