If you want to stand out as an information technology professional, an MBA degree may be just the thing to bring your career to the next level.
Writing on law.com, columnist Wayne Smith advises colleagues that "IT can never be viewed as an end in itself," and urges them to pursue MBA degrees.
"In order for all of our laudable skills and talents to add a penny's worth of value to the organizations that employ us, we must make a determined effort to learn the business from top to bottom," writes Smith.
Smith goes on to observe that an MBA is actually highly compatible with a high tech career. For example, he writes that IT exists to basically enhance the customer experience and advance an organization's processes.
Other similarities between IT and the business world include the importance of "human-friendly" information, justifiable investments with measurable outcomes, and the need to listen first and then respond effectively. Smith also stresses that IT professionals must be "systems thinkers" who can also be more engaged in their respective businesses than ever.
