Two prominent corporate executives have been under scrutiny recently over questions about the legitimacy of the MBA Degrees listed on their resume.
The CEO of Microsemi, James Peterson, and the Senior Vice President of Broadcom, Vahid Manian, are facing questions about their academic backgrounds.
As of Wednesday, the Broadcom website said that Manian had earned a BSEE and an MBA degree from the University of California at Irvine. However, a university spokeswoman, Cathy Lawhon, told the Orange County Register that Manian had merely attended classes at the school without graduating. "We have no record of him studying or earning an MBA," she told the newspaper.
Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for Brigham Young University told Bloomberg that Peterson had not received the bachelor's or MBA degree he had listed, even though he did apparently take classes there for two years.
Bloomberg also noted that another former CEO, Terry Lanni of MGM Mirage, had retired last month amid questions about his own MBA credentials. These and other suspect MBAs have been under investigation by Barry Minkow's Fraud Discovery Institute.
For those who are thinking of pursuing their own MBAs, news reports such as these can be cautionary tales, but they may also help underscore the opportunities and advancement often available to those who do complete their degrees.
