University business schools are going to have to change with the times to stay relevant in light of the lessons learned from the recession, according to incoming dean of the University of Illinois College of Business, Larry DeBrock, starting with a renewed emphasis on ethics training.
"Teaching ethics and sound judgment is not something that should ebb and flow based on some magical barometer of whether the business world is ethical or unethical," DeBrock said.
Ethics training has existed in business school for some time - DrBrock's new institution founded a Center for Professional Responsibility in Business and Society in 2006 - but in the aftermath of the alleged behavior blamed for the economic meltdown, there will be a new focus on ethical decision making and professional standards in MBA schools, according to DeBrock.
DeBrock expects a change in curriculum as MBA programs integrate lessons learned from the last few years. Courses will also have to reflect the new government regulation likely to be put in place to fend off future crises.
If you're interested in this new ethical direction in business, perhaps it is time for you to look into becoming an MBA.
