For students who once thought that an MBA degree from a top-ranked business school was essential for getting ahead, some are now learning that this is no longer the case.
A recent report in Forbes magazine notes that MBA programs like Harvard and Wharton were once see as tickets to elite Wall Street jobs. However, many of these positions don't exist anymore, while schools far away from Wall Street are finding their own ways to prosper.
The example highlighted by Forbes is Rice University in Houston, where as many as 40 percent of MBA students go on to work in the region's energy business after graduation.
"There are jobs out there. They may not be the exact jobs students hoped for when they came to business school, but they're good jobs," Andy Chan of Stanford University told the magazine.
This is a key thing for students to remember as they consider whether to pursue MBA degrees. The business world has changed considerably in recent months, but good companies still need highly qualified professionals to help them navigate the recession and emerge ready to become stronger than ever when the economy improves.
