With high-profile bankruptcies such as former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar in the news, the NFL is strengthening a program to send its athletes to business school and more athletes are considering MBAs, according to an article in BusinessWeek.
An MBA degree is a good check against financial mismanagement, something many superstar athletes, often recruited right out of high school, are prone to.
According to a recent report from Sports Illustrated, 60 percent of players in the NBA are virtually penniless within five years of retiring. The numbers are just as bad, if not worse, for the NFL, the magazine says, with 78% bankrupt two years into retirement.
According to some studies, though, athletes are excellent MBA candidates because they have high levels of dedication and professionalism, which are important for getting an MBA degree and achieving success in business.
According to a 2006 study by the University of Wisconsin, students who play sports seriously earn more in business-related fields.
Despite this, few professional athletes go on to attend MBA schools.
