The Environmental Defense Fund's Climate Corps program, which embeds MBA students into corporations as corporate sustainability advisors, has expanded to 26 students at 23 companies.
"Climate Corps fellows will help companies look at their day-to-day operations with a green lens, finding cost-effective ways to reduce their energy use," said Millie Chu Baird, EDF Climate Corps project manager.
The program started last year, with seven students, who the EDF says helped their host companies pinpoint ways to save $35 million in operational costs and cut 57,000 tons of carbon pollution per year.
The program involves intensive training for the students in fundamental energy efficiency strategies. They then get placed as Climate Corps Fellows at companies that agree to provide a dedicated high-level project sponsor.
The MBA students work for 10-12 weeks, detailing environmental improvements that make sound business sense, which they then present to the company, which commits to trying to implement the proposals.
A growing number of MBA students want to address environmental challenges, and programs like the Climate Corps, along with the growth of MBA programs focused on sustainable business are providing ways to do that. If you want to learn the skills to put environmental theory into practical use, maybe you should consider getting an MBA degree.
