A group of MBA students at Texas Christian University recently had the chance to combine their business education with a public service project in Guatemala that is improving the standard of living for residents of an impoverished city.
The Fort Worth Business Press recently reported on TCU professor Garry Bruton's visit to Guatemala last summer, which inspired him to enlist help from the school's MBA students for a follow up visit.
Bruton had learned that a local women's business co-op in the city of Chajul was faced with the prospect of going out of business, which would have been economically devastating for the nearly 50 members of the co-op and their families. The women in the co-op sell hand-woven textiles and the report noted that the entire organization's annual earnings were about $1,000.
"These people in Chajul live on less than a dollar a day
if this co-op ceases to exist, it's not just a business failure; the repercussions are severe in that region," Bruton told the Business Press. Bruton and about a dozen MBA students combined their efforts to help local residents with everything from finding new market contacts to finding efficient and sustainable new ways to create their products.
For those interested in pursuing an MBA, such experiences are a growing trend where students receive a more well-rounded education and get to make a difference helping others while still receiving an advanced business education that will benefit them for years to come.
