President-elect Barack Obama's choice to run the Small Business Administration is a former venture capitalist who is expected to be a strong advocate for entrepreneurs.
Obama announced his pick, Karen Mills, last week. The Washington Post noted that Mills received praise from both Republicans and Democrats.
The Post quoted Senator Olympia Snowe as praising her background in venture capital and lending, "which will prove beneficial during these times in which small enterprises require every tool at their disposal to create new jobs."
The chairwoman of the House Small Business Committee, Rep. Nydia Velazquez, was quoted as saying that Mills' prompt appointment "is a good sign for small businesses."
Mills and the rest of Obama's economic team will have their hands full in the coming months, since the incoming president has warned that conditions will get worse before they get better.
Meanwhile, this may be a great time to start thinking about your own business future. Many professionals decide to sharpen their skills during recessions by returning to the classroom or enrolling in online MBA courses.
A growing number of entrepreneurs and even small business owners have also chosen to earn their own MBA degrees to improve their competitiveness.
