An MBA degree combined with foreign language skills is an excellent way to get an advantage in an international business career.
This week, columnist Jim Landers of the Dallas Morning News observed that English is an official language in 52 countries and that business people from Finland to India use the language on a daily basis.
Landers goes on to cite statistics from anthropologist Dennis O'Neil, who reports that about 90 percent of all internet traffic and 75 percent of the world's mail and other communications are also in English.
Last year, the International Herald Tribune even noted that French students at the prominent Ecole Normale Superieur had even circulated a petition asking for their standard classes to be taught in French instead of the current English.
Despite the growing prevalence of English around the world, business professionals may be selling themselves short by not building their own foreign language skills.
"When you only communicate with people in English, you only get a certain level of what's going on," Marie-Luise Gaettens of Southern Methodist University told Landers. Landers also noted that foreign language skills improve your ability to think in general, and also cited the growing multi-lingualism of American life itself.
