An MBA degree is about more than just acquiring job skills - it's about making yourself the most complete and well-rounded business person you can be.
Writing in Forbes magazine, R. Glenn Hubbard observes that the current recession "has made it clear that some overly focused business leaders pursued innovation and profit at the expense of proper risk management."
He adds that the failure of these business leaders was so miserable, that the very schools they graduated from have even been called into question for producing them in the first place.
Hubbard, a former chairman of President Bush's Council of Economic Advisors, goes on to suggest that a successful MBA program blends traditional business themes with education about integrity and governance. With that in mind, a successful business program will "cultivate more nuanced skills that make a businessperson whole," especially looking to the future beyond the current recession.
The credit crisis and recession are already turning out to be teachable moments that MBA students and others will study for years to come. The Deseret News reports this week that the University of Charlotte is even seeking papers for conference this spring entitled "Business Ethics and the Credit Crisis."
