Recommendations Benefit MBA Students In Application Process

For students who are applying for MBA programs, one of the most important but often overlooked details can be a letter of recommendation, according to recent reports.

This week, Business Week magazine examined the importance of recommendation letters in the business school application process. The report quoted Sara Neher of the University of Virginia as saying that recommendation letters are "one of the biggest missed opportunities" for would-be MBA students, adding that "people do not make of it what they could."

The article advises students to seek out people for recommendations who are actually familiar with their work and accomplishments as opposed to just going for the biggest name they can find, especially since the magazine notes that admissions officers are already "hard to impress" and that such letters can take longer to process because they are often sent to a dean's office for review.

Prospective students are also reminded that letters do not trump a solid resume and application, although a well-written one from somebody who is actually familiar with you can only help.

If you're interested in applying for an MBA program, take some time to examine the many different opportunities that will be available to you, while also becoming more familiar with the various steps needed to succeed as an MBA student.
