MBA Degrees Becoming More Specialized

If you earn an executive MBA degree, you may find that your skills are in demand for an increasingly specialized range of duties.
EMBA programs are especially subject to this growing specialization, especially in fields like health care, finance and technology, reports the Wall Street Journal. The newspaper adds that about 7 percent of current EMBA programs offered specialized options, but points out that this figure has increased by about a percentage a year.
In the health care sector, MBA students are finding that specialized programs can give them an in-depth knowledge of their chosen industry. "There's so much I've been learning about the health-care industry that's not only hospital-based," MBA student Ruby Villavisencio, a hospital administrator, told the Journal.
The newspaper noted that health care EMBA degrees currently comprise about a quarter of all such specialized programs, while technology represents an additional four percent. And according to the Executive MBA Association, students who complete EMBAs report better leadership, team building and decision making skills, as well as more ethical awareness and global sensitivity.
Still, some business leaders warn that if you're working towards a specialized degree, you could just as easily miss out on relevant knowledge from a different field of expertise.
