President-elect Barack Obama recently announced the selection of Nancy Killefer for the new post of White House chief performance officer, a position that will see her attempt to curtail wasteful government spending.
For the Obama administration, identifying wasteful spending will be a daunting and somewhat ironic task in a time of trillion dollar deficits and almost unprecedented economic setbacks. The move is also a way for Obama to demonstrate to skeptics of his proposed $775 billion economic stimulus plan that he is serious about preventing waste, notes the Baltimore Sun this week.
"I intend to make sure we have unprecedented measures to ensure that taxpayers keep track of how this money is spent," the newspaper quoted Obama as saying.
To go with the newfound federal focus on preventing government waste, a number of companies, large and small, are finding that their own bottom lines depend on justifying the use of every dollar - especially when cost-cutting gives them the opportunity to avoid more drastic measures such as layoffs.
Given the importance of this task, demand is expected to remain strong for people with MBA degrees and advanced business training who can make sound decisions about spending. For example, media outlets and even the Bureau of Labor Statistics have identified cost estimators and procurement specialists as rapidly growing job fields.
Those who further their business education and keep on top of new skills and business needs will be especially well positioned to thrive in the job market, regardless of what the overall economy is like.
