The University of California at Davis is the latest educational institution to offer advanced business training for people interested in leading hospitals and other healthcare institutions.
The UC Davis Graduate School of Management recently announced that it was teaming up with the university's medical school for the new program. Now, students will be able to take the university's core MBA curriculum with an option for concentrating in public health management.
"Healthcare costs have reached 16.2 percent of our gross domestic product, with no proportional increase in the nation's health status. The nation needs more MBAs with a deep understanding of the management of healthcare organizations and the factors that lead to healthier populations," said John Troidl of UC Davis.
For an idea of how important healthcare executives and top administrators will be for the economy, look no further than the Bureau of Labor Statistics website. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook notes that employment in this area is expected to grow 16 percent, which is faster than average, between now and 2016.
According to the BLS, demand for these professionals will be fueled by the need to improve quality and efficiency in healthcare facilities while holding costs down - an ideal task for professionals who have MBA degrees.
