Sometimes people who hold MBA degrees are able to climb the corporate ladder at a faster pace because they already have a preexisting knowledge in their field of expertise.
ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, which develops medicines for cancer patients, recently announced the appointment of Timothy P. Clackson to the president of research and development. In addition to having an MBA degree, Clackson is also a veteran of the industry as well as the company.
Joining ARIAD in 1994, Clackson was most recently the chief scientific officer, a position that he will be retaining in addition to his new title.
Clackson's new position was recently created by the company, and he will be in charge of establishing a research and development organization for ARIAD.
"Tim has contributed immensely to ARIAD's success over the years and has led our scientific programs with great vision, thoughtfulness and excellence," stated Harvey J. Berger, M.D., chairman and chief executive officer of ARIAD. "In establishing an integrated research and development organization, we will streamline R&D decision-making and provide for focused coordination among functional groups."
If you're interested in more responsibility, an MBA degree may help you move up in your company.
