Tim Oakhill, graduate from the online MBA program at the University of Virginia, told his fellow graduates that founder Thomas Jefferson would be pleased that his vision for education has come to pass.
"In step with Jefferson's beliefs is the fact that we can no longer be good at just one thing and be valuable to the companies for which we work," said Oakhill, who is executive vice president of marketing at Simmons, the mattress company. "We must have the ability to be flexible, adaptable and, in general, be good at a lot of 'stuff'."
According to Furniture Today, Oakhill spent two years getting his degree in a mixed on-campus and online MBA program. He was chosen to deliver the graduation speech by his fellow graduates.
Oakhill said the MBA degree fulfills Thomas Jefferson's vision of, "an educational ethos where professional experiences and academic theory exist in a symbiotic relationship of shared learning not only from professor to student but also from student to student."
Tim Oakhill went back to school to get a distance learning MBA while still working for his company in order to expand what he can offer his work. If you want to do the same, perhaps it is time to get an MBA degree.
