Recent MBA graduates are more interested than ever in working for nonprofits and other organizations they may have previously been inclined to overlook.
A recent Business Week report focused on an "MBA Jobs You've Never Considered" event that was held at the University of Texas at Austin this month. About 70 participants - reportedly the largest turnout in recent memory - were on hand to consider opportunities working for the federal government and for nonprofits.
The upswing in interest in these employers is motivated by an overall decline in financial jobs in light of the recession. However, previous media reports have also cited a growing interest among MBA students in general for more class experiences focusing on public service and environmental sustainability.
The report noted that a number of schools have cited an increase in recruitment activity from both the government and the nonprofit sector, even as 75 percent of institutions say that overall recruitment efforts are down.
If you're interested in pursuing your own MBA degree, remember that your options are broader and more diverse than ever after graduation. A growing number of students have been using their MBAs to carve out interesting new niches for themselves in specialty areas that they are most interested in.
