There are seven skills that students must master to thrive in the new economy, according to one education author.
Writing in Education Week magazine, Tony Wagner declares that not even successful U.S. schools are sufficiently teaching students vital skills like critical thinking and problem solving, networking and leading by influence, or initiative and entrepreneurialism. Instead, he argues that there is still too much focus on having high school students memorize facts.
Wagner, author of The Global Achievement Gap, also cites agility and adaptability, effective communication skills, curiosity and imagination, and information analysis are also crucial for workers hoping to thrive in an information-based economy.
"I want people who can think - they're not just bright, theyre also inquisitive," former CEO Clay Parker told Wagner.
Critical thinking is seen as such a vital skill that there's even an organization, the Society for Critical Thinking, dedicated to teaching it all levels of the educational system.
These skills are equally important for older students, particularly those working on advanced programs like MBA degrees. Students who work towards an MBA will acquire all of the previously mentioned skills, and much more, giving themselves a competitive edge they will enjoy for the rest of their lives.
