Some career advisers have compared the trend to an investment strategy in which students don't want to put all their eggs in one basket. But many recruiters are telling schools they look for candidates who specialize in a specific area of business and have relevant work experience.

The unemployment rate in the U.S. was 10.2 percent in October, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Department of Labor says there are generally lower unemployment rates among people with a professional degree than people who have only a high school diploma.
