One advantage of an MBA degree is that it can take you to new opportunities in your home town or even on the other side of the world.
Some MBA students are even choosing to visit emerging financial powerhouses in the Middle East, such as the United Arab Emirates, with an eye on acquiring some international business experience after graduation.
In the U.S., Business Week reports that New York University and Wharton are among the schools that have initiated student job-hunting trips and other connections to places like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which have been relatively untouched by the global economic slowdown so far.
"Historically, students taking jobs in the Middle East have represented a small percentage of graduating MBAs, but that proportion is growing more quickly than other areas," Ivan Kerbel of Wharton told Business Week. The magazine noted that despite the region's hot job growth, recent graduates must still deal with a fairly close-knit business community as well as an occasional language barrier if they don't speak Arabic.
In the short term, many students who participate in these trips are simply looking for their first job after graduation. In the longer term though, they are setting themselves up with business experience that will prove valuable in an increasingly global economy.
