A recent Business Week article highlighted the fact that more individuals working towards an MBA degree are learning about socially aware business models.
Now, Stanford recently announced that it is involved in a similar initiative with the launch of its Social Innovation Fellowships. The grants are awarded to students intending to pursue socially or environmentally beneficial careers after achieving their MBA degree.
The first recipients plan on managing and overseeing two nonprofit projects in Mexico and Sri Lanka. The Mexico-based program is an employment agency of sorts, that matches semi-skilled laborers with companies in Spain.
Federico Lozano Fernandez, who will be running this initiative, explained to Business Wire that he aimed to create "the worlds first nonprofit international recruitment agency for the poor" and help "millions of men and women to develop their professional potential to the fullest and make a better life for themselves and their families."
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan nonprofit venture will teach rice farmers to be self-sufficient while increasing their profit margins and connecting their farms to global export companies.
These MBA degree recipients hope their education is used for social impact, indicating that an MBA can offer limitless applications. There are many opportunities around the country for those who want to achieve their MBA.
