Three graduate students in the University of Vermont MBA programbecame state experts and received a $98,440 grant to advise Vermont's Department of Public Service (DPS) on the effectiveness of its program to prevent damage to underground utilities.
"These students gained valuable experience and helped the state and other organizations at the same time," said Larry Shirland, professor and associate dean in the UVM School of Business Administration.
The students, Dave Roberts, Chris Lenox and Alanna Shanley, put together a report that looked at the locations and causes of utility incidents; examined market research, surveys and interviews with the various stakeholders who dealt with digging safety in the state; and research on best practices and trends.
What the students found was a lack of communication among the different groups, municipalities which weren't very involved, and dissatisfaction with the regulatory mechanisms and enforcement.
Roberts, Lenox and Shanley presented their findings to the DPS as professionals and experts on the issues involved on a large scale public works project after a year of intense research, producing a report Vermont will be using to set future policy. If you want to have that kind of influence on your community, perhaps it is time to look into getting an MBA degree.
