The latest nationwide unemployment figures help illustrate the importance of standing out over the competition in a tough job market - something that can be accomplished with help from an MBA degree.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the number of first-time claims for unemployment benefits jumped to 589,000 last week, an increase of 62,000 from the previous week. Bloomberg News noted separately that the jump in unemployment filings was the highest in 26 years, when the recession of the early 1980s was winding down.
In 2008, a total of 2.6 million jobs across the U.S. were eliminated.
The Labor Department also indicated that the largest increases in unemployment filings were in Michigan, California and Florida, while South Carolina, Massachusetts and New York were among those that saw filings actually go down somewhat.
With the labor market in its current state, professionals with an MBA degree can be more attractive than ever to employers because of the advanced business training they offer. Some people choose to save time and money by enrolling in an online MBA program, while others seek out a more traditional classroom setting. Either way, both options will lead to new opportunities as the economy improves.
