Some business professionals and executives are spending their time networking and looking for leads on possible jobs, even though they are still employed, the New York Times reports.

Recently Katherine Wu, an executive at NBC Universal, participated in a women's networking group in an effort to network and gain some job prospects for the future, according to the article.

"I equate this to dating," Wu told the news provider. "Networking is a basic numbers game. If you don't get out, you won't meet as many people."

This may be good and timely advice for MBA students entering the job market.

Recently, Businessweek reported that MBA students who network with their school's alumni as well as cultivating professional contacts in the industry have a better chance at landing a job.

The Graduate Management Council conducted a survey and found 28 percent of MBA degree graduates reported receiving their first job offer as a result of networking.

Even in better economic times, networking is regarded as a good way to get a lead on a job that may not be advertised by a company. People interested in an MBA career may want to take some time investigating various business school programs to find the best for them.
