MBA students who are starting to look around for summer internships may find that smaller companies and startups offer some previously overlooked opportunities.
A Wall Street Journal blog notes that many large financial companies have scaled back on their plans to hire summer interns but that doesn't mean everybody is doing so.
Kelly Spors of the Independent Street blog on wsj.com notes that January and February are ideal for planning things like summer internships, and cites Tom Kozicki of the University of California at Irvine's belief that "many students who might have sought internships with large companies will be more open to working for small and mid-sized companies."
Kozicki also told the blog that MBA students are especially helpful when it comes to complex business tasks like developing marketing plans or doing financial analysis.
The availability of interns who are working on MBA degrees is good news for business owners, who often benefit from the skills and knowledge these students have to offer. MBA students can gain specialized business experience and gain unique new perspectives with the many opportunities they can consider.
