This week, the New York Times reported that large companies like Goldman Sachs are increasing their support for programs that offer microloans and business education to women in developing nations. The World Bank is also reportedly committing $100 million in credit lines to them between now and 2012.
The newspaper noted that Goldman got involved with such efforts after determining that disposable incomes for women and their families in emerging markets would grow by as much as 14 percent if they acquired basic entrepreneurial and business skills.
"This is the next step for women because it’s investing long term in business skills," Geeta Rao Gupta of the International Center for Research on Women told the Times.
