MBA Graduates Getting Creative In Recession

A growing number of MBA graduates are seeking opportunities away from traditional areas like investment banking in light of the recession and current climate on Wall Street.

This week, Reuters reported that scaled back hiring by companies like Goldman Sachs and Bank of America has recent graduates competing for a much smaller number of positions while exploring opportunities in different areas such as startups.

The report also notes that while American MBA graduates are exploring different opportunities than they may have several years ago, more foreign-born students are now checking into business options in their home countries because of the U.S. economy.

"I knew there were not enough jobs to go around, so I had to improvise. It's slightly disappointing, but not too bad. It's still in line with my goals," Shrinkant Dave, an MBA student at Boston University, was quoted as saying by the wire service.

According to previous media reports, some Silicon Valley technology leaders are still hiring, although at a slower pace. Otherwise, the current business climate has led other MBA graduates to start their own companies, explore options in fields like renewable energy and nonprofits, and to even weigh job opportunities in other regions of the world that have not been as hard hit by the recession.

If you're interested in studying for an MBA degree, now may be an ideal time to get started, with many economists predicting that a recovery will begin as soon as next year.
