Students working towards MBA degrees at European educational institutions are finding some increasingly diverse subject matter to study, including themselves in some cases.
According to London's Financial Times newspaper, several prominent MBA programs in France and elsewhere are now giving students the opportunity to benefit from more introspective activities, such as monastic retreats and psychotherapy.
"The mission, the duty and the value of an MBA is to help people reflect on what they can become," Valérie Gauthier of HEC Paris' MBA program told the newspaper. The monastic retreat offered by HEC Paris reportedly features a priest and philosopher on hand to help students address ethical issues and other matters. The programs can also benefit students by preparing them for the professional and life changes that can come from earning an MBA.
Other examples presented in the article include an MBA program in the UK that offers courses focusing on personal psychology, and subsidized psychotherapy for MBA students and their partners at IMD in Lausanne, France.
It remains to be seen if this trend will carry over to MBA programs in the U.S. However, there already appears to be something of a revived interest in business ethics in this country in light of the recent Wall Street financial scandals.
