Members of the Brockton School Committee are in a heated debate with the city’s mayor over the issue of requesting National Guard support at Brockton High School. The committee recently sent a letter to the mayor asking for temporary National Guard assistance to address safety concerns at the school. However, the mayor has made it clear that he does not support bringing in the National Guard and instead believes in a collaborative approach involving the community, parents, students, educators, and law enforcement.

Despite the mayor’s reluctance, the School Committee members held a press conference outside the high school advocating for National Guard support to ensure the safety of students. They pointed to instances of violence and disruptions at the school, which have led to 35 teachers calling in absent and an increase in students leaving school grounds without permission. The committee believes that the National Guard’s expertise in crisis management and community support could help address the root causes of the issues facing the school.

In response, Mayor Sullivan emphasized the importance of giving administrators the tools to maintain order in the school and stated that National Guard soldiers are not the solution. The School Committee members’ letter to the mayor stressed the urgency of the situation, citing recent events at the school that have jeopardized the safety and well-being of students, staff, and the community. Previous violent incidents at the school, including fights and stabbings, have sparked concerns among teachers, students, and parents.
