AT&T VP Discusses Challenges and Costs of Launching Satellite Services
JR Wilson, the Vice President of tower strategy and planning at AT&T, recently opened up about the challenges and costs associated with launching satellite services. This comes as AT&T, alongside tech giants Google, Rakuten Group, and Vodafone Group, have pooled together up to $206.5 million in investment for satellite broadband provider AST SpaceMobile.
The investment in AST SpaceMobile seems promising, as extensive testing of its services with one satellite already in orbit has shown positive results. The company is now gearing up to launch five more satellites in the first half of 2024, with plans for commercial launch expected in 2025, contingent on the successful testing of these initial satellites.
AT&T is particularly confident in the potential of AST SpaceMobile, citing conservative modelling and the success they have had with US public emergency services. The company believes that global coverage will ultimately require 90 satellites, with AT&T focusing on a US launch initially by deploying around 45 satellites.
The collaboration between these tech giants and AST SpaceMobile represents a significant step in the direction of expanding broadband services through satellite technology. With the potential to provide internet access to remote and underserved areas, the success of AST SpaceMobile could have a lasting impact on the telecom industry.
As AT&T and its partners continue to push the boundaries of satellite technology, the future of broadband services may soon be reaching new heights. Stay tuned for more updates on the developments of AST SpaceMobile and its journey towards providing global satellite coverage.
