Anesthesiologists top the list with a median annual wage of $281,680, making them the highest earners in the city. The importance of higher education in securing these high-paying jobs is evident. The Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that higher degree holders generally earn more and experience lower rates of unemployment. In fact, the top 50 highest-paying jobs in the nation all require at least a bachelor’s degree, and many even require advanced degrees such as master’s or doctorates. Workers with a bachelor’s degree had median weekly earnings of $1,305 in 2020, compared to $781 for those with only a high school diploma.
The analysis also revealed that occupations like pharmacists, optometrists, and nurse practitioners have a significant presence in Lafayette. Pharmacists, for example, have a median annual wage of $123,700, while optometrists earn $125,990 per year. Nurse practitioners in Lafayette have a median annual wage of $129,290.
