Illegal Takeover of Columbia University Academic Building by Professional Outside Agitators: NYPD
Last Updated on May 1, 2024 by Robert C. Hoopes
A recent incident at Columbia University has escalated into a concerning situation, with NYPD officials and Mayor Eric Adams placing the blame on outside agitators for an illegal takeover of an academic building. Mayor Adams stated that these agitators have their own agenda that is causing discord and divisiveness, rather than promoting peace and unity on the campus.
The NYPD’s Intelligence and Counterterrorism unit identified the group responsible for the takeover as professional agitators, rather than students. These individuals used violent tactics to break into the building, causing damage and escalating the situation. One of the identified agitators is Lisa Fithian, a known professional protester who has been causing trouble in various movements since the 1970s.
Officials are concerned that these agitators may be influencing peaceful student protesters to follow their lead, potentially spreading the violence seen at Columbia University to other protests and universities. The NYPD has warned that if the university requests help, they will step in to clear out the agitators and potentially charge them with burglary, criminal mischief, and trespassing.
Furthermore, students who do not vacate the campus lawn as warned by Columbia may face charges of trespassing and disorderly conduct. Mayor Adams urged students to distance themselves from the violent group for their own safety and the safety of others. He also advised parents to be aware of their children’s involvement in the situation.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of outside agitators infiltrating peaceful protests on university campuses. The NYPD and university officials are working to address the situation and maintain safety and order on campus.
