The National Black MBA Association: Empowering Minority Graduate Business Students

Since its establishment in 1970, the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) has been a driving force in supporting minority graduate business students. Founded during a challenging time in race relations, the organization aimed to provide support for Black MBA candidates and create a national network for Black MBAs.

One of the founding members of the NBMBAA, Alexander Gabbin, who currently serves as a director and professor of accounting at James Madison University, played a key role in the organization’s early days. Gabbin served as treasurer for the first conference in 1970, which brought together faculty from 29 graduate business schools, corporate executives, and MBA student delegates.

After a successful follow-up regional meeting in 1971, the NBMBAA was officially incorporated in New York in 1972. Since then, the organization has made significant strides in education and wealth building for historically underrepresented individuals.

Key initiatives of the NBMBAA include the annual conference and exposition, the Leaders of Tomorrow scholarship program, and the National Business Case Competition. These programs have provided essential opportunities for Black MBAs to excel in the business world.

Alexander Gabbin emphasizes the NBMBAA’s role as an advocate for promoting the aspirations of Black MBAs and providing resources to overcome barriers to success. Through its ongoing efforts, the NBMBAA continues to empower minority graduate business students and create a more inclusive and diverse business community.
