Former Boston High School Principal Charged with Misusing School Funds

Former Boston high school principal, Naia Wilson, has been charged with misusing nearly $40,000 in school funds for personal use. Wilson, who admitted to committing wire fraud totaling approximately $38,806, requested checks from the school’s external fiscal agent account under other individuals’ names. She then fraudulently endorsed the checks to herself and deposited them into her own bank account.

According to authorities, Wilson used the funds to pay for two luxurious all-inclusive trips to Barbados, one in 2016 and another in 2018. Additionally, she requested checks for two friends who accompanied her on these vacations. Christopher DiMenna, acting special agent in charge of the FBI, referred to Wilson’s actions as an abuse of authority and a personal slush fund.

Wilson has already pleaded guilty to the charges and has agreed to pay restitution. She will appear in federal court at a later date to face sentencing. If convicted, she could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.

Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy emphasized the importance of holding those who abuse public trust accountable. He stated, “This case serves as a reminder that individuals who misuse public funds will be discovered and prosecuted. We will continue to work diligently to protect public resources and ensure that those in positions of authority act with honesty and integrity.”

This incident of misuse of funds follows a similar case in which a Catholic school teacher in Washington, DC, embezzled $175,000. It highlights the need for stronger oversight and accountability in the education sector.

The discovery and prosecution of individuals like Wilson and the Catholic school teacher are crucial in maintaining public trust and ensuring that funds allocated for education are used appropriately.
