Louisiana recently honored its 2024 Teacher and Principal of the Year at the prestigious Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Awards Gala, which took place at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. The event celebrated the outstanding contributions of educators in the state and their significant impact on students’ lives.
Kylie Altier was named the overall Louisiana Teacher of the Year for her innovative teaching methods and unwavering dedication to her students. Altier, a first-grade teacher at Buchanan Elementary, was recognized for her remarkable efforts in creating a mobile kitchen for her students to cook fresh vegetables. Additionally, she incorporated virtual reality headsets into her curriculum to enhance her students’ learning experiences.
Tia Mechelle Trahan, the principal at Lafayette Middle School, was honored as the overall Louisiana Principal of the Year. Trahan’s exemplary leadership skills and commitment to creating a nurturing and supportive environment for both students and teachers contributed to her well-deserved recognition. She also completed the Louisiana Institute for School Leaders program, showcasing her dedication to professional development.
The gala also recognized other outstanding educators in Louisiana. Phedra Jackson received the Louisiana Early Childhood Teacher of the Year award for her exceptional work in early childhood education. Arielle Hughes was honored as the Louisiana Early Childhood Leader of the Year for her remarkable leadership skills. Phoenix Morel LeBlanc was acknowledged as the Louisiana New Teacher of the Year, highlighting her exceptional talent and potential as a new addition to the teaching profession.
