(Word Count: 305)
Louisville, KY – Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) has announced that it will not be considering the use of Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) after classes were unexpectedly canceled on the first day of school. The decision comes after a tumultuous start, with transportation issues leaving students waiting for hours for buses and experiencing mishaps during the evening ride home.
Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio referred to Wednesday as a “disaster” for the district’s transportation department. Students faced lengthy delays in the morning, and some encountered difficulties during their evening journey back home. Distressed by the situation, JCPS School Board members James Craig and Sarah McIntosh have assured parents that NTI is now completely off the table. Craig stated that it is not being considered by anyone.
Emilie McKiernan Blanton, a member of the Jefferson County Teacher Association’s Board of Directors, confirmed that there are no plans to implement NTI. Teachers, instead, are using their time to reorganize lessons and engage in mandatory trainings and meetings. The district intends to address the busing issue during an upcoming board meeting, with Craig emphasizing the need to prioritize solutions in order to prevent a recurring problem.
In an effort to keep parents informed, JCPS officials have scheduled a press conference for Friday at 1 p.m. During the conference, the district will provide an update on the bus situation, which has caused significant concern among students, parents, and faculty. The press conference will be live-streamed by WHAS11.
The decision to scrap NTI plans for the time being and focus on resolving the transportation crisis reflects the district’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and efficient educational experience for students. JCPS hopes that by prioritizing these issues, it can restore parents’ confidence in the district’s ability to provide reliable and prompt transportation services.
As the community eagerly awaits the promised updates, JCPS faces the challenge of regaining trust while managing the logistical hurdles brought on by the unforeseen transportation problems. Parents and students alike are hopeful that the district’s swift response will resolve these issues and lead to a successful academic year ahead.
