Brockton School Committee Seeks National Guard’s Assistance at High School
In a recent news conference, four members of the Brockton School Committee detailed their plea for the Massachusetts National Guard’s support at Brockton High School. The committee highlighted concerns such as violence, substance abuse, non-students trespassing, and a staffing shortage as justification for their request.
Expressing worries for the safety of students and staff, the members clarified that they are seeking the National Guard’s aid as substitute teachers and hall monitors, with the aim of maintaining a secure environment. They emphasized that their goal is to address underlying issues at the school, rather than establish a military presence.
However, not everyone is on board with this proposal. Mayor Robert Sullivan stated that he does not support bringing in the National Guard and is instead collaborating with local law enforcement to address safety concerns. City Councilor Winthrop Farwell Jr. also voiced opposition, suggesting that a committee of classroom teachers should be involved in decision-making regarding school safety measures.
Brockton High School, known for its large student population, has been affected by budget cuts leading to staffing shortages, which has presented challenges for the administration. Recent incidents of violence at the school have sparked alarm among students, parents, and community members.
While the Brockton School Committee did not disclose specific details of their plan, Gov. Charlie Baker’s office has acknowledged the situation and committed to ensuring school safety. The debate over the use of the National Guard at Brockton High School continues as stakeholders weigh in on the best course of action to address safety concerns.
