Title: No. 8 North Carolina State Dominates No. 19 Pitt, Extending Winning Streak
No. 8 North Carolina State (NCSU) showcased their wrestling prowess in a spectacular victory over No. 19 Pitt on Thursday, with a commanding 31-6 triumph. The match drew a crowd of 2,059 enthusiastic spectators.
Jarrett Trombley of NCSU set the tone for the team’s success by overwhelming Colton Camacho of Pitt with a dominating score of 13-4 in the 125-pound weight class. Following Trombley’s lead, Kai Orine of NCSU continued the winning streak with an impressive 10-1 victory over Vinnie Santaniello of Pitt in the 133-pound weight class.
Pitt managed to secure a win in the 141-pound weight class, as Cole Matthews defeated Ryan Jack of NCSU with a score of 15-10. Nonetheless, NCSU bounced back with stellar performances by Jackson Arrington, who secured a hard-fought 4-2 win against Finn Solomon of Pitt in the 149-pound weight class.
The momentum continued for NCSU as Ed Scott dominated his opponent, Jared Keslar, in the 157-pound weight class with a 16-3 victory. Derek Fields in the 165-pound weight class secured a 7-1 win against Holden Heller of Pitt, while Alex Faison triumphed over Luca Augustine of Pitt with a score of 7-5 in the 174-pound weight class.
Pitt managed to rally in the 184-pound weight class, as Reece Heller defeated Dylan Fishback of NCSU with a narrow 4-3 victory. However, NCSU swiftly recovered, with Trent Hidlay decisively outperforming Mac Stout of Pitt with a resounding 20-4 win in the 197-pound weight class. In the 285-pound weight class, Owen Trephan further solidified NCSU’s dominance by securing a matching 20-4 victory against Geoff Magin of Pitt.
With this win, NCSU’s wrestling team improved its record to an impressive 11-2, with a 1-0 record in the ACC. Pitt’s wrestling team, on the other hand, now holds a 7-6 record with a 0-1 record in the ACC.
Meanwhile, in other wrestling news, Franklin & Marshall (F&M) trounced Sacred Heart with a commanding score of 33-10. Key highlights included James Conway’s exemplary tech fall score of 19-3 against Hunter Perez of Sacred Heart in the 184-pound weight class, and John Crawford’s impressive pin against Jake Trovato in the 197-pound weight class.
The women’s wrestling matches also had their share of excitement, with New England College and Columbia facing off against Sacred Heart at noon and 2 p.m., respectively.
Later in the day, Jakob Camacho of North Carolina State showcased his exceptional skills by winning the Appalachian Open, going undefeated with a perfect 3-0 record.
Furthermore, Coast Guard was scheduled to participate in the Wildcat Open at Johnson & Wales, commencing at 9:30 a.m. In another notable matchup, Little Rock was set to compete against Stanford, with their match being streamed live on the Pac-12 network at 6 p.m.
