Job Listings for AI Roles Increase in Film and Television Industry Amidst Protests from Writers and Actors
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the entertainment industry is on the rise, with job listings for AI-centric roles increasing despite protests from writers and actors. Companies like Disney, Netflix, and Sony are among those offering lucrative positions focused on AI, with salaries ranging from $200,000 to over $1 million.
One such example is Netflix, which is currently seeking an engineering manager for ML model computing and serving foundations. The role requires a minimum of three years of experience, highlighting the demand for skilled professionals in this field.
Sony AI is also actively hiring, listing positions related to “AI ethics”. These include a research scientist and an AI ethics technical program manager. These roles reflect a growing concern within the industry about the ethical implications of using AI in creative processes.
NBCUniversal, the parent company of the Peacock streaming service, is also jumping on the AI bandwagon. They are currently looking to hire a vice president of product, personalization, and search. This position offers a competitive salary ranging from $220,000 to $290,000 per year.
However, these job listings have not come without controversy. Hollywood writers are currently on strike, demanding higher pay and protesting against AI’s potential to replace their jobs. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) proposed a compensation package to address their concerns. Nevertheless, the Writers Guild of America rejected the offer.
The proposed package by AMPTP included a ban on generative AI being considered “literary material” and offered wage increases over a span of three years. Negotiations between the two parties are ongoing, with both sides hoping to reach a resolution and end the strike.
As the entertainment industry continues to explore the potential of AI, tensions between writers, actors, and producers persist. The outcome of this strike will undoubtedly shape the future of AI’s role in film and television, and its impact on jobs within the industry.
In the meantime, job seekers with expertise in artificial intelligence have a unique opportunity to make their mark in Hollywood. These high-paying positions offer a chance to shape the future of entertainment while also navigating the ethical concerns associated with AI’s integration into creative processes.
