Metro Atlanta Schools Closing for April 8 Solar Eclipse
Last Updated on March 23, 2024 by Robert C. Hoopes
Most metro Atlanta schools are gearing up for the partial solar eclipse set to take place on April 8. While some districts are maintaining normal schedules, others like the DeKalb County School District have decided to declare April 8 an independent learning day.
DeKalb County students will be staying home on April 8 but are expected to continue their studies and complete schoolwork. This decision has garnered mixed reactions, with some criticizing the missed opportunity for a hands-on learning experience.
In 2017, metro Atlanta schools adjusted their schedules during a total solar eclipse due to safety concerns. This year, the Cobb County School District has planned an early release day to avoid any potential issues during the partial eclipse.
On the other hand, districts such as Atlanta Public Schools, City Schools of Decatur, Clayton, Fulton, and Gwinnett counties will operate on normal schedules. Some schools are taking the opportunity to provide students with eclipse glasses and host special events to mark the occasion.
The total eclipse will be visible in Dallas, Texas and Caribou, Maine, with North America not witnessing another total solar eclipse until 2044. Stay tuned for more updates on how schools in the metro Atlanta area are handling this celestial event.
