My MBA Career Defies Negative Perceptions of MBA Programs – Poets&Quants

The University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business is celebrating an increase in applications for its full-time MBA program in 2023, making it the only premier MBA program in Texas to experience such growth. The rise, although modest at 1.2%, brings the total number of applications to 1,889.
Rodrigo Malta, McCombs’ managing director of MBA recruiting and admissions, believes this increase showcases the school’s standing as a top choice for business education. It is particularly noteworthy as the growth encompasses all five MBA programs across three campuses in Texas.
One factor that may be contributing to McCombs’ appeal is the allure of Austin as a study destination. Known for its vibrant ecosystem, thriving business environment, cultural diversity, and high quality of life, Austin has proven attractive to prospective MBA students.
Notably, not all business schools are experiencing a surge in applications. The Graduate Management Admission Council reported a worldwide decline of approximately 5% in business school applications for 2022-2023. Among elite MBA programs, besides Texas McCombs, only Stanford Graduate School of Business has reported application growth. On the other hand, prestigious institutions like UCLA Anderson School of Management and Columbia Business School have faced significant decreases.
Despite the overall decline in applications, McCombs has reported a boost in enrollment. Domestic enrollment has surged by 74%, and the school has achieved a record-setting admission rate of 20% for first-generation college students. Additionally, the MBA class of 2023 is highly diverse, with 18% identifying as U.S. underrepresented minorities and 35% as U.S. minorities.
The positive trend is not limited to the full-time MBA program. McCombs’ offerings for Working Professionals and Executive MBA programs have also witnessed an increase in applications and class size. Moreover, the growth in underrepresented minorities, women, and military veterans further highlights McCombs’ appeal and its role as a leader in the MBA landscape.
Described as intelligent, talented, and diverse, the incoming class of 2025 shares a common goal: to make a positive and lasting impact at McCombs, the University of Texas, and the city of Austin. With its growing reputation and commitment to inclusivity, McCombs School of Business continues to attract aspiring business leaders seeking a transformative MBA experience.
