The U.S. Department of Education is currently investigating allegations of student harassment within Owasso Public Schools, following a complaint filed by the LGBTQ+ advocacy organization Human Rights Campaign on February 21st. The complaint has raised concerns that the district may have failed to appropriately respond to harassment claims in accordance with federal guidelines.
Owasso Public Schools received notice of the investigation on Friday and has stated that they believe the complaint is unfounded. The investigation is centered around whether the district failed to adequately address alleged instances of student harassment, as outlined in Title IX, Section 504, and Title II. It is important to note that this investigation does not reflect a judgment on the validity of the complaint itself.
This investigation comes in the wake of the tragic death of 16-year-old Nex Benedict, who passed away shortly after an altercation in a school restroom. While the cause of the altercation is still under investigation, there is speculation that it may have been related to Benedict’s nonbinary gender identity. Police have ruled out trauma as a cause of death, pending an official autopsy report.
The Human Rights Campaign has called for justice for Nex and all students in Oklahoma, advocating for a safe environment free from harassment, bullying, and discrimination. In response to the investigation, protesters have rallied at Owasso High School as students staged a walkout. Additionally, the Human Rights Campaign has requested the Department of Justice to conduct its own investigation into the matter.
As Owasso police continue to investigate the details and evidence surrounding the altercation, the community waits for further updates. It is a time of grief, reflection, and a call to action for schools to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
