Title: Boston University Center for Antiracist Research Cleared of Financial Mismanagement
Boston University has recently concluded its initial inquiry into the finances of the BU Center for Antiracist Research, stating that there were no issues found in how the center managed its funds. This inquiry was launched following the center’s decision to lay off roughly half of its staff and alter its operating model.
Auditors conducting the investigation determined that the center exhibited appropriate financial management of its grants and gifts. Since its inception, the center has successfully raised over $50 million in funding, with $30 million being allocated towards an endowment. Various projects and research initiatives have already been completed with this support, although the center has yet to finish some ventures, including a graduate program and an antiracist campaign database compilation.
Founder of the center and acclaimed author, Ibram X. Kendi, expressed disappointment in the allegations connecting Black individuals’ financial management abilities to him. He firmly stands against these claims and believes they are unjust.
Moving forward, the university’s inquiry will shift its focus towards the center’s management of grants from external funders, as well as its compliance with reporting requirements. Additionally, a consulting firm has been hired by the university to examine the center’s culture and management.
Publicly, both current and former center staff members have criticized Kendi’s management and called into question the center’s achievements. However, Earl Lewis, a historian and former provost, explains that it is not uncommon for research institutes in their early years of operation to undergo restructuring.
As part of the restructuring process, the center has plans to hire another consulting firm. This firm will assist in developing short- and long-term strategies, ensuring a more effective and sustainable future for the center.
In conclusion, Boston University has cleared the BU Center for Antiracist Research of any financial mismanagement after its initial inquiry. The center’s ability to handle grants and gifts appropriately has been recognized. As the university continues its investigation into external funding and reporting compliance, the center remains committed to further progress and has plans to enhance its operations with the help of a consulting firm.
