Princeton University Faces Congressional Investigation Over Controversial Academic’s Role in Xiyue Wang’s Captivity

Princeton University is under scrutiny as the House Committee on Education and the Workforce investigates the involvement of its controversial academic, Hossein Mousavian, in the prolonged captivity of Xiyue Wang in Iran. A group of twelve Republican lawmakers has raised concerns about whether Princeton sought Mousavian’s assistance in securing Wang’s release and whether Mousavian offered to leverage his connections to facilitate his freedom.

Xiyue Wang, who endured imprisonment in Iran from August 2016 to December 2019, has accused Princeton University of failing to utilize its influence to secure his release. Furthermore, Wang claims that the university is repeating the same pattern of inaction in the case of another student, Elizabeth Tsurkov, who was kidnapped in Iraq in 2023.

Wang and his wife previously filed a lawsuit against Princeton University, asserting that they suffered significant harm as a result of the university’s actions. However, the terms of the settlement reached between the parties remain undisclosed.

In response to the allegations, Mousavian vehemently denied any involvement in Wang’s captivity and emphasized that both the President and the Foreign Minister of Iran lacked the authority to intervene in Wang’s case. Mousavian expressed condemnation towards acts of kidnapping, assassination, and terrorism.

In Wang’s lawsuit, it was claimed that Mousavian frequently published articles supportive of the Iranian regime while Wang was in captivity. Moreover, Princeton University was accused of permitting Mousavian to advance the interests of the Iranian regime.

Standing by the congressional investigation, Wang asserts that Princeton University must address the committee’s questions and clarify its relationship with Mousavian. The probe seeks to shed light on whether Princeton sought Mousavian’s help in Wang’s release and whether the university was complacent in advocating for his freedom.

As the investigation unfolds, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce aims to uncover the truth behind the captivity of Xiyue Wang and ensure that such incidents never recur. With Princeton University under scrutiny, many await the committee’s findings and hope for a just resolution to this distressing chapter in Wang’s life.
