New President of American University Named: Jonathan Alger of JMU

Jonathan Alger, the current president of James Madison University, has been selected as the next president of American University, taking over from Sylvia Burwell on July 1. Alger, who has served as president of James Madison University for the past 12 years, is expected to bring his extensive experience in higher education to his new role at AU.
Alger is known for his commitment to encouraging students to aim high and is excited about the opportunity to lead a university with a strong academic reputation and global influence. His background includes developing strategic plans for universities that prioritize engaged learning and community involvement. With over three decades of experience in higher education, including working in the U.S. Department of Education’s Civil Rights Office, Alger is well-equipped to lead American University into the future.
