Winter Storm Causes Disruption in Omaha-Area Schools and Businesses
Omaha, NE – A winter storm has brought havoc to the Omaha-area, leading to the closure and change of schedules for several schools and businesses.
Snowfall totals have varied widely across the region, with Columbus reporting the highest accumulation at 13 inches. In the metro area, snowfall has ranged between three and six inches, and another inch or two is expected throughout the morning.
The forecast for the rest of Tuesday predicts an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow that will move eastward, with higher amounts likely in Southwest Iowa. However, there is some good news as the intensity of the snowfall is expected to decrease in western areas due to increasing winds.
Unfortunately, those same winds are causing travel difficulties and poor visibility, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph. The Omaha Metro area will experience the worst travel conditions before 10 a.m., and extreme caution is advised for anyone venturing out.
Thankfully, the snowfall is expected to taper off by 9 a.m. in the metro area, although some areas in the east will continue to see steadier snowfall.
Temperature-wise, the day will begin relatively warm, but it will gradually decrease throughout the day with wind chill making it feel like the single digits for most of the day.
Residents may find some respite from the winter weather on Wednesday, although there is a small chance of afternoon snow. However, another round of accumulating snow is forecasted for late Thursday into early Friday.
This storm is also bringing with it the coldest air in over a year, with temperatures dropping well below zero during the weekend.
A winter storm warning is in effect until noon today, and residents are advised to stay updated with the latest information.
