New Report Reveals AI’s Potential to Impact Jobs Across Industries
A new report by jobs site Indeed’s economic research team has shed light on the potential impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on the job market. The study, which analyzed over 55 million job postings published between August 2022 and July 2023, found that generative AI, specifically GPT-4 (a version of ChatGPT), has the potential to impact every job on Indeed’s platform.
The research team identified more than 2,600 skills sought by employers and then assessed GPT-4’s ability to perform these skills. By incorporating both generative AI tools and human expertise in their methodology, they were able to determine the level of exposure of each job to AI.
The findings revealed that roughly two-thirds of jobs were moderately exposed to generative AI, meaning GPT-4 could perform at least 50% of the listed skills. Furthermore, approximately 20% of jobs were highly exposed, with GPT-4 capable of performing at least 80% of the skills required for those roles.
The report also highlighted the potential risks of automation for jobs highly exposed to generative AI. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, these jobs are at a higher risk of being automated. However, it’s worth noting that certain skills still require a human touch and cannot be easily replicated by AI, such as driving a car or working in hospitality.
Furthermore, the study emphasized the limitations of theoretical AI skills in real-world job performance. While GPT-4 may possess the ability to perform a significant portion of job skills, there are still complexities and nuances that AI struggles to replicate.
In addition to analyzing the impact of generative AI on different jobs, the study identified the 10 roles most exposed to AI out of the 25 most common jobs analyzed. These roles are at the forefront of AI integration and may see significant changes in the coming years.
As AI continues to advance, the findings from Indeed’s report provide valuable insights into the potential impact on various industries and job functions. It is essential for both job seekers and employers to stay informed about these developments to navigate the evolving landscape of the job market successfully.
