In a recent development regarding safety concerns at Brockton High School, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey has voiced her opinion that calling in the National Guard is “not appropriate.” This statement comes after four members of the Brockton School Committee requested support from the National Guard to address issues such as violence, substance abuse, and security worries at the high school.
The concerns raised by students and parents include the potential impact on student attendance if the National Guard were to be present at the school. Despite this request for additional support, Brockton Mayor Robert Sullivan does not support adding National Guard members to the school.
However, community members are mobilizing to show their support for Brockton High School. Dozens of individuals recently held a standout to advocate for real change and unity within the school community. Former students, including Manuel Lopes, have also expressed their support and emphasized the need for collaboration at both the local and state levels to address these pressing concerns.
In a promising development, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has agreed to fund a 100% school safety audit for Brockton High. This audit will help identify potential areas of improvement in terms of safety and security within the school.
Despite facing a $14 million deficit, Brockton Public Schools remain optimistic about the future. Rally participants are hopeful that community unity and collaboration will prevail, ultimately enhancing the school environment for both students and staff alike. As the community continues to come together in support of Brockton High School, it is clear that positive change is on the horizon.
